Due to the Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 end of life in November 2021, we strongly recommend planning the migration to Drupal 8 as soon as possible. Having an updated Drupal 8 website means being prepared for Drupal 9 as the latest Drupal version will be the base for Drupal 9.0.0.

7 reasons to migrate to Drupal 8 (and don’t wait for Drupal 9)

What does Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 end of life mean?

What doest Drupal 7 EOL mean?

If you're a Drupal website owner, it means that you should seek the help of official vendors who provide long-term support for no longer supported Drupal versions.

While we're all waiting for Drupal 9 release, it's high time to migrate to Drupal 8 and keep it updated. Why? There are mainly security-related reasons for Drupal 6 websites and features-related reasons for Drupal 7 websites.

If you have a Drupal 6 website

  • Your Drupal 6 website may get security updates with a delay. For example, when a problem with the supported Drupal Core versions arises, usually a backport to Drupal 6 is needed.
  • Bug fixes for Drupal 6 are unlikely.
  • No new features for Drupal 6.

If you have a Drupal 7 website

  • You don't have as secure website as you could have got with Drupal 8.
  • You don't have the WYSIWYG editor, new field types, Quick Edit, Responsive Images.
  • You don't have built-in Web Services that let other websites, apps interact with your website.
  • Drupal 7 isn't mobile-friendly out-of-the-box and has worse accessibility in comparison with Drupal 8.

Why migrate to Drupal 8 now and don't wait for the Drupal 9 release

Why migrate to Drupal 8 now

We all anticipate Drupal 9 in June 2020 - not such a long wait. But why we advise moving to Drupal 8 first?

  1. If you want to migrate to Drupal 9, you'll have just 1 year left before the Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 end of life. Are you sure you'll be able to raise funds and execute the migration that fast?
  2. Moreover, Drupal 9.0 is supposed to be built on Drupal 8.9. The Drupal 6 to 8 migration efforts and Drupal 7 update efforts are going to be the same as if we migrated to Drupal 9.
  3. It's worth waiting for a couple of minor Drupal 9.0.0 patch releases with bug fixes. It can take a few months.

To recap, what options do we have?

If your plan is to migrate to Drupal 9 straight away, you'll have just 1 year to allocate a budget and migrate the website.

If your plan is to migrate your Drupal 7 or Drupal 8 website before the end of life in November 2021, so you have 2 years to implement everything.

The cost of Drupal 6 support

We checked the pricing plans for Drupal 6 websites. Let's do some math.

  • The monthly support for those who depend on their website "for revenue, have custom hosting, or regularly need to make maintenance and support requests" is $625 (check the official Drupal 6 LTS vendors).
  • Having such a website on support, you'll pay $7500 annually.
  • $7500 is the budget sufficient for the migration of a small website to Drupal 8.

Drupal 6 support is not that cheap. Consider moving to the latest CMS version to have your money invested in new features development, not into supporting the minimally acceptable level only.
