(Don’t) migrate to Drupal 9 now
Drupal 9 is here - are you excited? We are. But don’t go all-in right away: let the community test this release thoroughly first. Luckily, we have 3 different solutions for different use cases: find the packages for Drupal 7, Drupal 8 website owners, and the start-up package.
Drupal 9 readiness
Drupal 9 is released and those who love cutting-edge technology are wriggling on their seats - c’mon! Let’s migrate to Drupal 9 as soon as possible! We share this enthusiasm but we advise our clients to wait a bit until a new minor version is live and the major issues (if there are any) are fixed.
We also anticipate that more Drupal contributions - themes, modules, profiles - will be claimed to be “Explicitly Drupal 9 compatible” by the end of 2020 when Drupal 9.1. is released.
According to Acquia, now there are 9081 Drupal 8 projects and only about 25% of them are explicitly Drupal 9 compatible; 32,5% have only info.yml/composer.json problems which is not a big deal. 8,6% will get automatic updates thanks to Drupal Rector and 14,3% are covered by Rector partially. Let a community take their time to prepare Drupal 8 contributions for Drupal 9.
The Drupal 9 release cycle
We haven’t persuaded you? Let’s check some figures and address the Drupal core release cycle. The important dates are:
- June 3, 2020: 8.9.0 released, 9.0.0 released. End of security support for 8.7.x.
- December 2, 2020: Drupal 9.1.0 released. End of security support for 8.8.x.
It’s 6 months before the release of Drupal 9.1.0. What happens between two minor releases?
For example, there were 14 patch and security releases between Drupal 8.7.0 and 8.8.0. As we see, the latest release of Drupal 8.7 is 8.7.14! Look how many fixes were made during this gap between minor releases.
We highly recommend to give Drupal 9.0 some time and don’t migrate existing projects to Drupal 9.0 right after the release in June: Drupal 8.9 is literally the same thing with Drupal 9.0, so we advise staying on this version for a while. In 6 months, the Drupal community will provide an enormous amount of feedback and cover many bugs and issues.
